Taxes
How much tax your city brings in, how to set the tax rate and what high or low taxes do.
Taxes are your most important income. They come in continuously, every game hour, and never go negative.
What your city pays
| Source | Tax per hour |
|---|---|
| per resident (levies and rent) | 4 $ |
| per commercial tile | 12 $ |
| per industrial tile | 16 $ |
Larger buildings pay more than small ones, and towers in dense districts pay more the taller they are. Rent on the upper level is 2.5 times as high (Skyscrapers and Floors). Smog lowers the rent in residential areas (Smog and Air).
The tax rate
In the finance window under "Taxes" you set the rate, separately for Housing (rent), Trade and Industry.
| Level | Rate | District value |
|---|---|---|
| very low | 60% | +8 |
| low | 80% | +4 |
| normal | 100% | 0 |
| high | 120% | -5 |
| very high | 140% | -12 |
Low taxes make districts more popular and more people move in. High taxes bring in more money right away, but cost popularity and make people discontent (Discontent). Since high-rises need good values across the board, high taxes also slow growth upward.
Click a level and the preview shows taxes per hour before and after plus the new district value. Only "Apply" sets the rate.
- Without Premium you can change each district type once per game hour.
- With Premium you can change rates at any time and even per subclass: trailers, houses and apartments, shop houses and office towers, storage yards, workshops and factories.
What raises taxes further
- the City Hall from VIP level 3
- the tax booster from the shop (Boosters)
- the university and the Trade Overdrive for trade and industry
- boosts from your friends (Boosts Between Friends)
- schools in the catchment area raise the rent
