Commuting and the Way to Work
Who lives, works and shops where: how far your people travel and why long trips and jams lower the value of residential areas.
Commuter
Every morning your residents drive to work and back in the evening, and in between they go shopping. The game works out for every house where its people work and how they get there. That creates the traffic on your roads (Traffic and Jams).
The way to work
- Residents look for work up to about 100 tiles away.
- Long trips cost points of district value, up to 6 points.
- Jams on the way cost even more, up to 22 points.
- The field info shows the partial value "Commute".
Long trips also make people discontent (Discontent).
Commuters from outside
If your city lacks workers, commuters from other cities fill up your industry. They keep the businesses running but do not count in full: the industry's "workers nearby" value only counts your own residents.
How to shorten the trips
- Do not build work and housing too far apart, but keep the dense district in between as a buffer.
- Wide roads on the main axes (Roads).
- Bus stops in residential areas. Whoever takes the bus is not stuck in traffic (Buses and Bus Stops).
- Roundabouts at junctions with little traffic (Roundabout).
