City
Jobs and Unemployment
Why your city needs jobs, what unemployment and overtime do and how to keep the balance.
Man
Part of your population goes to work, in shops, offices, workshops and factories. If workers and jobs do not match, the whole city feels it.
Too little work
- Unemployed people become discontent, and discontent drives crime (Discontent).
- Houses appear mainly where people find work. Without jobs a city only grows into the backlots.
- If more than 8% are unemployed, more tent camps appear in the backyards (Backlots and Backyards).
Too much work
If there are more jobs than workers, your people work overtime. That makes them discontent too. Commuters from other cities help industry out, but do not count in full (Commuting and the Way to Work).
Where the jobs are
| Employer | Jobs |
|---|---|
| Shops in dense districts | about 4 per tile |
| Industry | about 8 per tile, depending on the business |
| Offices in towers and on the upper level | per floor |
| Mines, food stalls and large buildings | a few |
