Roads

Road, wide road and highway: what they cost, what they are good for and what to keep in mind when building roads.

Site manager

Roads connect everything. Without a road nearby nobody moves in and no building can be placed. Every road also needs a connection to the highway, which links your city to the rest of the planet.

Road types

TypeWidthFor
!Road Road1 tileresidential streets and light traffic
!Wide road Wide road2 tilesmain axes between housing, work and trade
!Highway Highway4 tileslong distances and very heavy traffic (Highway)

Roads cost 150 $ per tile, counted over width and length. A wide road therefore costs twice as much per tile of length, a highway four times as much.

Road: one lane per direction
Wide road
Wide road: two lanes per direction

A wide road has two lanes per direction. Cars line up before every junction, so turning cars don't hold up the straight lane.

Building

Choose the road type in the Colony build menu, click the starting point and drag the road. The preview shows price and problems. If your new road crosses an existing one, you choose right away: junction (Junctions and Traffic Lights), bridge (Bridges) or roundabout (Roundabout).

  • Parallel roads need one tile of space. Road surfaces never touch.
  • A road straight across the canyon turns into a bridge on its own.
  • At the highway a cloverleaf interchange appears on its own (Highway Interchange).

Traffic lights

Every junction with at least three sides gets traffic lights that follow the traffic by themselves. How exactly that works is explained under Junctions and Traffic Lights.

Demolition

Tear roads down with the excavator or in the road editor. The preview always marks the piece up to the next junction, a click shows tiles and price. It costs 10 $ per tile (Demolition). The junction tiles stay.
